Farhan, Yasir record shock victories

KARACHI, Sept 16: Teenagers Farhan Mahboob, Yasir Butt and Khalid Atlas of Pakistan pulled off the major shocks in the first round of qualifying stage of Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) International Squash Championship at Pakistan Navy Roshan Khan/Jahangir Khan Squash Complex on Tuesday.

Asian Junior Champion Farhan Mahboob, a nephew of former squash star Jansher Khan defeated Liam Kenny of Ireland in straight games to advance in the second qualifying round.

Farhan, placed 120 in Professional Squash Association (PSA) ranking, looked in great nick as he ousted world number 63 Liam Kenny 15-6, 15-13, 15-13 in 45 minutes.

Yasir ranked 242 in the world produced allround court craft, nicks and drops to down Glenn Keenan ranked 69 in the world. He needed just 32 minute to send Australian packing. He won 15-13, 17-14, 15-11.

Khalid Atlas, another newphew Jansher and son of Atlas Khan played the most exciting and the gruelling match of the day when he toppled Peter Barker of England in five games.

In a match lasting 62 minutes, Khalid recovered from 1-2 down to overpower Barker 3-2.

Khalid started well by picking the opening game 15-13 but Barker got act togather took the next two 15-7, 15-9 to gain lead.

But Barker ran out of steam and taking advantage Khalid sealed the fate of the match by snatching the last two games 15-4, 15-7.

Wednesday matches starts at 2.00 p.m.

The main rounds of US$25,000 championship starts from Thursday.
