Whatmore unhappy over losing both series

RAWALPINDI, Sept 16: Bangladesh cricket coach Dav Whatmore has warned some of his players to toughen up or lose their places on the team.

“If I do find one or two players who are not prepared to toughen up for international matches then they won’t have a very long career at all,” Whatmore said here.

Whatmore is still searching for his first win in Tests or One-day Internationals since taking over Bangladesh last June.

Bangladesh lost three-Test series in Pakistan 3-0 and are 3-0 down in the five-match one-day series with two to play.

With two matches to play on their tour of Pakistan, Whatmore said he was looking for improvement.

“I had some hopes in this one-day series at the start of it. But I have revised my goals and objectives after first game. But generally we are moving in right direction,” he said.

He expressed his disappointment after his lost the third one-day (day and night) international to Pakistan.

“I am disappointed the way team played and I am would not say that I am satisfied with its performance but I would say the players are in right direction,” he told reporters.

He said nothing much has been left for the Bangladesh after three defeats in a row but he still thinks that players can improve further.

Pakistan coach Javed Miandaded was delighted after his side took 3-0 lead and expressed the optimism that the tea will make a clean sweep in the five match series by winning the remaining two games.

“We are very positive about it (winning the series 5-0) and we are in right direction,” he said.

He said he was satisfied with the performance of the team but added that players need more hard work and efforts to mould themselves in quality cricketers.

Home captain Inzamam ul Haq said it was very good omen that players have improved a lot in fielding which was a problem of the team for many years.

Meanwhile, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram had encouraging words for Bangladesh, however, saying the side’s improvement showed in their fielding and attitude.

“They will get there in two or three years’ time. You have to give them time. Sri Lanka won the World Cup 16 years after getting Test status.”—Agencies
