KARACHI: A policeman was shot dead in Malir City on Wednesday, the police said.

They added that 35-year-old head constable Malik Abdul Hafiz was riding a motorcycle when armed motorcyclists attacked him near the Jamia Arabia seminary in Gharibabad.

He sustained five bullet wounds and was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

The suspects also took away his mobile phone, cash and pistol, said Malir City SHO Abdul Khaliq Marvat.

He had served in Malir City for a considerable period and had been transferred to DIG east headquarters around two months ago.

He lived in Green Park City in Shah Latif Town. It was not known as to where he was going, said the police officer.

The officer suspected that the incident might be linked to the ongoing targeted killing of policemen in the metropolis. The deceased was in plain clothes at the time of the incident.

The police authorities suspended and demoted the Malir City SHO following the murder of the head constable in the area. The victim originally hailed from Gujrat and has one child.
