DHAKA, Sept 14: The High Court on Sunday unseated Delwar Hossain Sayeedi of Jamaat-e-Islami from Parliament by declaring his election from a Perojpur constituency void for giving false statement of election expenses.

The bench pronounced the verdict after nearly two years of hearing of the case. Advocate Sudhangshu Shekhar Halder of opposition Awami League, Sayeedi’s nearest rival in the last parliamentary polls, challenged the validity of Sayeedi’s election in the court on Nov 14, 2001.

Jamaat is one of the major partner of the ruling BNP’s four- party coalition.

Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, who is allowed to appeal against the verdict, told reporters that he would move the Supreme Court and seek a stay.
