MULTAN: A case against a man who had attempted self-immolation in the police lock-up has been lodged with another police station.

Ghulam Nabi, a resident of Chak 166/10-R, Khanewal, had set himself ablaze on Monday in the lock-up of the Sadar Police Station, Khanewal, in protest against police for not accepting his version in a case which he called fake.

An FIR was lodged against Ghulam Nabi with the Sadar Police Station on Oct 29 on the complaint of his wife who accused him of attempting to rape her daughter (from another husband). Police had arrested the suspect on Nov 8.

Ghulam Nabi set him on fire by dousing his clothes with mustard oil when he went to bathroom of the lock-up to take a bath.

The police staff and other detainees of the lock-up rescued him and shifted him to the DHQ hospital where the doctors declared him out of danger though he had received burns.

Ghulam Nabi told the media that he was implicated in the fake case as he had caught his wife in an objectionable condition with a man. He said his wife already had three marriages before marrying him and now she wanted to get divorce and get married for the fifth time. He alleged that over his refusal to divorce her, his wife had implicated him in a fake case.

After his self-immolation bid, the Sadar police registered a case against Ghulam Nabi for attempted suicide on the complaint of Sadar SHO Zahid Mehmood with the Kuhna Police Station as the building of Sadar police was located in the jurisdiction of that police station.

Police also nominated one Laleera in the case, a resident of the same area, for allegedly providing oil and matchbox to Ghulam Nabi in the lock-up while two policemen, Constable Ijaz and Naib Muharrar Tauqeer Abbas, had also been nominated in the case over negligence. The case was registered on the direction of District Police Office Rana Ayaz Saleem who also suspended both the nominated policemen.
