GUJRANWALA, Dec 20: The city veterinary hospital has been running without medicines and equipment for the last three years.

Some doctors told this correspondent here on Thursday that since the introduction of new system of local bodies no grant was given to the hospital by the district council. Thus they have no funds to purchase medicines and repair out of order equipment, they added.

They said the hospital building also needed reconstruction and repair.

Farmers from far flung areas who brought their sick animals to the hospital expressed their anguish when they were told that there were no medicines.

They demanded that funds should be given to the hospital administration to purchase medicines.

MARKET COMMITTEE POLLS: The election to Gujranwala market committee chairman and vice-chairman were deferred by the district council on Thursday.

The district council in its last meeting nominated the members of market committee and resolved that election for chairman and vice-chairman would be held on Dec 20. But the election could not be held due to “unavoidable” circumstances and were deferred once for an indefinite period.

It is learnt that the district council will announce fresh date for elections in its meeting to be held on Dec 28.

The treasury group nominated Chaudhry Sabir Ali, the younger brother of PPP former MPA and union council Nazim Chaudhry Zahid Pervez, for chairman and Saood Dar, the son of former MPA Mian Azhar Hasan Dar, for vice-chairman. Political circles were expecting that both the nominees would be elected unopposed.

But, differences developed between the PML (Chattha) and the PPP leaders on the nominations. The leaders of former political party were accusing the latter that they wanted to set up their monopoly in the market committee.

However, leaders of both the parties were trying to resolve the issue amicably.

CONDOLENCE: Chaudhry Wajahat Husain of the PML-(QA) visited tehsil city Naib Nazim Chaudhry Ehsanullah to offer his condolence on the death of his father, former federal minister Haji Amanullah, on Thursday.

Later, he met party activists and urged them to forge unity among their ranks for the sake of party instead of waiting for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

He said the party leaders were trying to unite all factions of the Muslim League.

Chaudhry Wajahat assured them that loyal workers would not be ignored in future and would be given important posts in the party.

HOUSE LOOTED: Seven dacoits in police uniform pillaged the house of a landlord and beat up men when they put up resistance in Naushera Virkan on Thursday.

The outlaws stormed the house of one Nazir Sindhi in Garianwala village. They tied the hands of family members with a rope. They collected Rs10,000 in cash, gold ornaments weighing 10 tolas and a 12-bore licenced gun. They beat up Muhammad Anwar and Muhammad Aslam when they resisted their bid to tie their hands.

Police have registered a case and are investigating.
