Reema wins US award, asks India to allow Pakistani films in cinemas

WASHINGTON: Pakistani actor, Reema Khan has been presented with the America Abroad Media (AAM)’s 2014 Partner Award for her role in the series Reema Khan’s America, local media reported.

In partnership with AAM in 2013, Reema starred in the Pakistani television series Reema Khan's America, a series which follows the 43-year-old actor as she set out to discover her new country through the eyes of a Pakistani, testing stereotypes about life in the US and exploring what it means to be an American.

At the awards ceremony organised by AAM on Thursday, Reema appealed to the Indian government to allow the release of Pakistani films in the country, saying it would pave the way for cultural exchange and help develop both film industries.

"For the last couple of years, Indian films are being released in Pakistani theatres, which is wonderful. Now I am expecting the government of India to allow the release of Pakistani films in Indian theatres," Reema told Press Trust of India.

"Through films, audiences of the two countries can be brought together. They can carry a very strong message. They can understand the traditions, values and cultural system which has developed in Pakistan."

Reema also praised Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, who had been honoured with the AAM award last year for highlighting social issues in his popular television serial, Satyamev Jayate.

"Being a celebrity, he is doing such a wonderful job. I really appreciate his efforts and his work as an anchor of Satyamev Jayate," Reema said.

Co-chaired by former US National Security Advisor Gen (rtd) Michael Hayden, the AAM also felicitated Oscar-nominated director Paul Greengrass, well-known Saudi journalist Turki Aldakhil and documentary film organisation, Impact Partners.

Having appeared in over 200 films, Reema made her film debut with Bulandi in 1990.

In 2006, she made her debut as a director and producer with Koi Tujh Sa Kahan, which won the Best Film award at the Lux Style Awards. Reema also won two awards for Best Actress and Best Director.

I remember two Pakistani movies that were released in India, Khuda Key liye and Ramchand Pakistani. I particularly liked the later. It will be great if we can have pakistani movies here. A lot more people may be able to relate to these movies than the Hollywood ones. We have some things in common and some in conflict. We can celebrate our commonalities together and for the things that we dont aggree on, we are anyway two seperate nations.

India does not ban Pakistani films. Just Pakistani film makers should learn how to make films that can appeal Indian audience. In international trade nothing is one-way traffic, Pakistan would never allow Indian movies if India does not allow Pakistani. Just crack the free market... :) The films like Waar will never run in India.. India being a Hindu majority and people lover their ancient traditions so much, current Pakistani films are far off from the market appeal. Free market economics...

I'm bit confused, other than Waar, I don't think there are any specific bans Indian govt has on Pak films. The rest are business decisions - Bol and Khuda Ke Liye impressed investors and others did not. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Huh? But who said Pakistani films are banned in india? Bol released here. Pakistani serials too come here on tv. Bol Didn't earn much. Maybe that's why producers from across border shy from investing here as earning return chances is risky. The serial from across border is too slow paced for fast paced people in india. It requires great deal of patience to sit through and watch which indians snit have patience.The content is good but indians as general don't like too serious and dark movies or too slow paced movies or serial after 9hrs of wrk. They prefer quick,time pass, fun, full package, fast track movies for three hrs of entertainment dhamaka. Even indians Art films in india are no different they face same problem look at the fate of good movies dedh ishiqiyaa, ship of thesis, haider,shahid etc etc all got critical acclaim and national international awards but earning at box office was too dull compared to other star studded commercial average segment movies which cross 400crore mark each.

If Pakistani producers can find Indian distributors there is no reason why Pakistani films can't be released in India. The government has nothing to do with it. It's just money. Hardly any Tamil or Malayalam or other regional language films get released in Mumbai or Delhi.

@muhammad You are right. Why are some Indians against her statement. She has won an award and should be congratulated. I am ashamed of my Indian brothers for being negative. I see Indian and Pakistani movies, comedies and TV serials. Both have their own standards. They should not be compared. Yes Indian Cinema owners want to make money but there are some small cinema houses that run Pakistani movies. However, her statement that Indian Government should allow Pakistani movies is her lack of knowledge. Indian government does not ban regular Pakistani Movie. I wish Reema good luck and more success my Pakistani neighbor

@Jai : If you call Indian movies as Hindi then you are badly mistaken. All Indian Movies are URDU Movies. 99% of title names, wordings, poetry, dialogues, songs, etc are all URDU not Hindu. Did you ever listen or watch real Hindi News? You will not understand 95% of it. Urdu (which is known as Hindi in India) is a big source of communication in India. Did you watch your Indian's Scholars, Writers, Script Writers, etc interview? including Javed Akhtar, Nadeem Khan, Kafe Azmi, Laxmikant, Pran, etc. They all agree that Indian Movies are actually Urdu Language Movies not Hindi. If you actually make real Hindi Language movie and cast all 3 Big Khans, it will flop completely. So, you will not have any problem at all watching Pakistani movies. GOD Bless us All!

There has not been a ban on Pakistani films being shown in India. It is only a business decision. If distributors think they will make money by releasing those films in India, they certainly will release them in India.

Pakistani TV Serials are being shown on Indian TV Channel Zee Zindgi and as very few Urdu movies are being made in Pakistan these days even then few selected movies were released in India. Only popular Hindi Indian movies are released in Pakistan but many popular movies were not released in Pakistan due to Pakistan sensitivity for storyline as Hindu boy affair with Muslim girl (Ranjhana) or story based on Kashmir (Haider)

But why ? Pakistani art is atleast 3-4 decades ahead of Indian cinema/TV. Our story,direction and screenplay are worldclass despite low budget. Indian cinema is crass with just glitz and nothing else. Besides, Pakistani actors are so much better looking. She should work and contribute to Pakistani film industry.

It is our job to develop Pakistani Cinema and not India's. We get Bollywood films because we want them and it's not because India wants it that way. Same applies to Hollywood films. It is stupid to ask the Govt. of India to allow Pakistani films, make a Pakistani film which Indian distributors would want to carry in their cinemas.

Film industry in India is controlled by "K" mafia. Khan, Kapoor, khanna, Kumar. Only few exceptions Big B or Dharmendar but they also accept package deals Covering the whole family members. It is impossible for new artist to get acceptance in the industry if not related to some influential personality of Bollywood. Huge amount of money is spent on marketing before release of any "Dabba" film of K mafia and so much hype is created that each time new records of first week earning are established. Chances are very remote for even high quality Pakistani movie to make good business in India. are established

Well...so many comments from both sides of the border. Films, artists etc all are secondary to establish and expand on 'any' sort of people-to-people (P2P) contacts and relationships. First and foremost the PA and and the Indian establishment have to sort out all outstanding issues. From then on all these will secondary activities will go on and flourish. Until then, such P2P contacts will be whimsical and at the mercy of the level of animosity going at the time between the countries when the film releases.

Congratulations certainly due. However, the lady is mistaken that the Pakistani films are not allowed by the Indian Govt. to be screened in India. As a matter of fact, any film from any country is allowed as long as it meets the Board of Censors', an independent body, guide lines. The problem lies in the language. Even when an Indian Urdu-speaking Muslim visits his relatives in Pakistan the communication problems do crop up. The reason being, since the partition, the Pakistani Urdu has absorbed lot more Farsi as well as Arabic words & terminology. Barring some heavy Urdu words and slangs, I have no problem in understanding the Urdu language as spoken in India. ' Cause it is heavily based with Hindi & Devnagari. However, I am completely lost when it comes to listening to the news or serials on the Pakistani channels. However, with good script and addition of vernacular subtitling could overcome this problem, IMHO.

@muhammad - Indians mostly use the original language which was called "Hindustani" language and which was derived from a language spoken in UP called "Khari Boli". The grammar and composition of Hindustani language comes from Sanskrit and vocabularies mostly from Sanskrit and Farsi with a few from Arabic and Turkish. The pure Hindi is where all the Farsi, Arabic and Turkish vocabularies are replaced with Sanskrit derived Hindi vocabuaries. And the pure Urdu is where all the Sanskrit/Hindi vocabularies are replaced with Farsi/Arabic vocabularies. If you replaced most of the vocabualries from English language with Urdu vocabularies and start calling it "Hinglish" then it won't necessarily become a new language. All the grammar and composition of Urdu comes from "Sanskrit". Please write in Urdu sentences like "Aap Kaha rahte hai", "Aap ka naam kya hai". There is no Urdu word in the above sentences as they all come from Sanskrit.

The reason Indian audience watches these films is because all 1,119,995,999 of you wish they looked like the 1000 actors that make up Bollywood. There are no restrictions. You need to spend some money on promotion and then find willing buyers and distributes. Convince them that the movie is commercially viable in India. Then go to the censor board get your rating and have your Pakistani movies screened. Pakistan film industry has a golden opportunity with Na Maloom Afrad- commercially one of the biggest Pakistani hits n it's a comedy flick. If movies like Housefull (though it has Akshay Kumar) can do well then Na Maloom Afrad ke aapka yeh picture kyon nahi chalega. For more details see how Munna bhai MBBS did well in India- had 10 people watching the first show. Around 20 came for the second show.Thanks to word of mouth publicity of that brilliant film from day 2 onwards it was a house full for 2 to 3 weeks. Also I dunno much about O21 but if it is a good movie then the audiences of large Indian metros esp Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai n Kolkata may appreciate it despite it being in English- An English movie will certainly do well in South Indian metros. But first promote and get willing buyers. May be if a Pakistan movie has known faces like Fawad Khan or Ali Zafar distributors will be more willing to invest as known faces will somewhat reduce the risk.

A Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, Nepali, Afghanistani, Irani loves Indian movies and claims that they can understand the language too. Claim is true because Hindi, the way it is used in Bollywood is a mix of multiple languages that originated in India (including Urdu). Sinhala and Bangla originate from Pali language which in turn came out of Sanskrit. Indians mixed it with "Farsi" to create Urdu (Farsi was from Iran). Hence everybody loves Bollywood. So what the the languages native to Pakistan? its Punjabi, Sindhi, and languages spoken in Balochistan and FATA. You have adopted Urdu from India just like we used Farsi from Iran.

@KS009 All Indian Movies are URDU Movies. They are a mix of hindi and urdu known as Hindustani language, urdu is anyway a recognised Indian language. So whats the big deal, are we going to start a war about who 'owns' urdu? A languages is not owned by a single community or country..its meant for anyone and everyone.

@muhammad Pathetic. Few years back, Pakistanis were crying that Bollywood Hindi Film industry is killing their Urdu Cinema industry. Now, when they failed to misconception of superiority of Urdu over Hindi language, they started new drama that Bollywood industry is urdu film industry. As a matter of fact, Pakistani urdu have over 70% Hindi terminology and 30% Farsi/Arabic. Even for simple Hindi words, there is no substitute in Urdu and these Hindi words are used in urdu in same manner. For example, Aap, Tum, Tumhara, Hai, Kyonki, Rai and lots more. Pakistani need to rethink and re-orient themselves about facts and fictions.

Don't know if there's any 'linguest-o-meter' in world which measures how much quantity of urdu or hindi has been spoken...lol Dont know if you have heard this term -"Hinglish" its been recognised by ToI, Hindustan times, is included in Cambridge dictionary, basicaly its English along with Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Hariyanvi, Marthi maybe Gujrati, Bengali etc etc its just a spoken language that is being spoken in India today. Uptill the question of talent have you gone to all house in India and Pakistan with your 'talent-o-meter'. Actually if you see it from a birds eye view it would be clear that many people are going towards english song industry eg. Kunnala, Krishna, Agni, Ocean Blue, Lost Stories, Vishal Baradwaj has his own band and who can forget Priyanka Chopra..just like many others.....

@KS009 URDU is an INDIAN language,OK ? It did not arrive solely in pure Pakistan direct from the moon. Save for South Asian workers,it is NOT a spoken/written language in IRAN/AFGHANISTAN/ARABIA/TURKEY which are the supposed "home" countries of all Pakistanis (LOL) !!!!

@ahsen we all are fighting on such pitty issue of language........we should congratulate to the lady first...else if we talks about which industry is better than off course indie is the largest economy in the would....we have huge spending power and so does our government and people promote and support talent..but I don't think Pakistani government support and appreciate their actor/actresses talent that is why they comes in India or sum other county for earning there bread and butter.

When India is welcoming pakistani actors to work in bollywood, stand up comedians in TV shows and singer to sing in bollywood movies, I do not understand what is hindering Pakistan movies to be released in India. As an Indian, I welcome this move.

Indian movie budgets are usually 50 to 1000 crores rs for each film(80 to 1700 pk rs) . Is there any Pak films can compete in Indian market? Btw there is no ban Pak films

Also, Indian movies are not just Bollywood, Telugu film industry produces more films than Bollywood afetn with high budgets(in 80s Telugu industry produced more films than Hollywood). Many Tamil films budgets are higher and betters quality than Bollywood films. Malayalam films are often very with rich content and more realistic than Bollywood. Indian films budgets varies from 10 to 1000 crore INR, is there any chance Pak films compete in Indian market. There is no ban on Pak films in India

@Raj Well said. Hindi and Urdu are called 'register languages' by experts, both were derived from 'khari boli' prevalent throughout the Indo-Gangetic plains. It is true Urdu as written and spoken in Pakistan is heavily laden with additional Arabic and Persian vocabulary.

@muhammad Whatever..Both are Hindustani languages..Urdu has nothing to do with Pakistanis they always seems to be proclaiming Urdu is theirs. In Pakistan Punjab its Punjabi. In Karachi its Sindhi..In Balochistan its Baloch..in Pakhtun is Pashto..Urdu is originated and developed in present day Indian region..Urdu Khalis hindustani Zaban hai..

@Raj I partially endorse your views except your last sentences actually this confusion arises when you call "Hindustani" as "Hindi" whereas "Hindustani" is much closer to "Urdu" any shudh (pure) Urdu speaking or any other language speaking person in Sub-Continent (india and Pakistan) can easily understand "Hindustani" whereas no other person except Hindi speaking people can understand "Hindi"

@Hassan Well Punjabi and Sindhi are your languages but why are they banned in your Parliament and State Assemblies? But coming the this debate of Hindi v Urdu- What is used in India and Pakistan is the Hindustani language- a mixture of both the languages. The difference being that in our movies Hindi is a bit more prevalent as compared to Urdu whereas in Pakistani movies Urdu is more prevalent. And as far as bollywood movies are concerned they use neither but Mumbaiya tapori language- "Chal Chal watak le"- This is neither close to Hindi nor Urdu :P

As an Indian, I would love to watch Pakistani movies in India. I feel some movies, like Operation 021, which did not do very well with the Pakistani audience, would have done well with Indian audience. However, more of movies that showcase Pakistani culture would do better than movies made in Bollywood style.

@smnabil The Hindi used in BBC Hindi uses a lot of Sanskrit words , while the Hindi used in Indian movies is Hindustani as developed in West UP from Khari Boli , Awadhi , Braj (all middle Indo-aryan languages) , Sanskrit, & also uses loaned farsi words . Hindi is spoke in different ways by people of different North Indian ethnic groups , with different choices of vocabulary

While many comments from both sides of the border are good, encouraging; some are jingoistic about their respective industries, talents, good looks, bad looks and what not !!! It's just that all the people (except saints or murderers amongst us) do not need entertainment. So chill out guys, and get entertained by watching some good movies amongst the lot that are produced. You don't need intellectual analyzing framework for enjoyment. There are serious movies for that.

Indian movies are neither pure Hindi nor pure Urdu. It all depends on a particular movie and the subject addressed. Movies like Munnabhai, Lunchbox use Mumbai style Hindi. Whereas movies like Jindagi na milegi dobara does use some poetry in Urdu. So, it really depends on a particular movie and common mass does not understand entire Urdu vocabulary. So, for making Pakistani movies successful this language barrier needs to be somehow taken care of. We will love to see Pakistani movies provided we understand them, usually good piece of art will not be ignored. Also, I don't think Pakistani films are banned to release on Indian theatres. It is a matter of a simple economics.

Many of the Indians do not even know that Pakistan do produce movies. It happened because of minimum exposure of your artist in your own country. Your artists & cricketers even settled in India for better exposure,fame & money & these people also know they get much attention & exposure here. So, at initial level grow your own industry..give it a decent exposure.. India always welcomes artists (yaha pe jo bikta,,vo chalta he :) )
