SWABI, Sept 4: Two orphan sisters died and their brother received injuries when the roof of a house collapsed due to heavy rains and thunderstorm which hit the district and its suburbs on Wednesday night and early in the morning on Thursday.

After the death of their parents, they were living with the grandmother in Kalabat village in a mud house.

A boundary wall on the first floor of a neighbouring house fell on the mud house, resulting in the sisters death on the spot who were sleeping along with other inmates of the house.

The people of the area extracted the bodies of Arjuman, 15, and Bakhthshida, 16, from the debris while their 11-year-old brother Gulzar was rushed to a nearby hospital. He was said to be out of danger.

But their grandmother, who was also in the house at the time incident, remained unhurt.

The heavy rains and thunderstorm also damaged the standing crop of maize grown across the district, caused frequent power breakdowns in parts of the district and submerged some areas of Topi, Bamkhel, Kunda, Sheikh Dheri and many other localities.

There were big pools of standing water at Swabi bus stand and Topi bus stand after the rains that also choked the sewerage system of Topi bazaar creating problems for the people passing through the bazaar.

The standing rain water at various points on Swabi-Topi road and Topi-Tarbela road also created hurdles for the vehicular traffic.

ACCIDENT: A speeding passenger van run over a child in Charbagh, on the outskirts of Swabi, on Thursday. Its driver fled after the incident.
