ISLAMABAD, Sept 4: Society for the Protection of Rights of the Child (Sparc) has called upon President Gen Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali to amend the relevant federal civil servants rules for prohibiting civil servants from employing children as domestic workers.

According to a press release, Sparc was making efforts to highlight the plight of child domestic workers and advocate for their rehabilitation, and to prevent children below the age of 14 from working as domestic workers.

As part of the ongoing campaign, Sparc is organizing a two- day national conference on the state of children who have been forced to work as domestic workers in Islamabad on September 6.

Among the millions of child labourers in Pakistan, the highest number are found to be working at homes as domestic workers. Though in huge numbers child domestic workers remain invisible and therefore out of reach. Special awareness and advocacy approach is required to bring the issue out for open discussions.
