HYDERABAD, Sept 3: The Government Secondary Teachers Association has condemned the proposed construction of shops on the property of a school.

At a joint meeting held here on Wednesday, Hyderabad city and and Government Muslim High School units of the association regretted that headmaster Amir Ali Mirza who resisted the construction of the shops was being harassed.

The meeting, which was presided over by Hyderabad GSTA president Safar Memon, said on the one hand the literacy week was being observed at official level and on the other conspiracies were being hatched against educational institutions.

Earlier, a separate meeting of the GSTA, school unit, decided to partially boycott academic activities in protest against the construction of the shops.

It warned that the scope of the protest would be enlarged if no action was taken against officials concerned.

Meanwhile, the EDO, education, directed the headmaster on Sept 1 to immediately report to the Sindh department of education and literacy, Karachi.

The headmaster in a letter to the DO, education, on June 16 had said the school belonged to the Evacuee Trust which had handed over its building to the education department with the condition that it would only be used for education purpose. He had said the building could not be rented out, sold or transferred.

He had called upon authorities concerned not to consider the application of the builder seeking permission for constructing the shops.

The builder had moved an application to the Sindh secretary for education in April for constructing 21 shops along the boundary wall of the school.

The City Taluka Council at its meeting held on Saturday had also rejected the construction of the shops on the school property.
