LAHORE: A 16-year-old girl suffered horrific injuries as two men threw acid in her face in a row over a failed marriage proposal, officials said Sunday.
S was attacked late Saturday at her home in the village of Qaim Bharwana in western Pakistan's Punjab province.
“Two men, Muhammad Tauseef and Asmat Ullah, climbed the wall of a house while family members were asleep and threw acid on the face of S, “police investigating officer Ejaz Hussain told AFP.
He said the two men were angry because the girl's family had rejected a marriage proposal from Ullah.
Hussain said Tauseef had been arrested but police were still raiding different addresses in an attempt to apprehend Ullah.
Muhammad Mumtaz, a senior doctor at the main hospital in the nearby city of Jhang, said Batool had sustained 90 per cent burns on her face, and her eyes had been badly injured.
Acid attacks, which disfigure and often blind their overwhelmingly female victims, have long been used to settle personal or family scores in Pakistan, with hundreds of cases reported each year.
The attacks fit a wider pattern of eroding women's rights in the country.

These attackers should be punished in ground in front of all people and should be shown on all tv channels. Punishment should be "Double the amount of acid should be threwn on their face".

For the short term, the perpetrators must be caught and given the harshest of sentences. For the long term (once the PLMN and PPP rule is history), better legislation is needed to protect harmful substances from getting into the hands of the wrong people.

@bozo the clown-> These sort of incidences are far more prevalent in India.In US military rapes are a common occurrence. Hopelessly saying that Pakistan is the only country where such occurrences are routine is not wise. You have to hope that there is some good in this world and its worth fighting for.

Make acid a controlled substance that is only available to businesses. We need to start some whereand that might be the easiest step. Our nation is full of illiterate people who jump the gun for every issue. That will take educating the masses which the politicians don't want. The politicians and the affluent don't care because crimes like these don't happen to their loved ones.

Acid is used as a weapon in Pakistan. Acid should not be available in a free market except to licensed users. Attackers should get severe punishment i.e. acid thrown on them in public.
