ISLAMABAD, July 22: The Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench, has granted stay to Pakistan Olympic Association in a case challenging the relevant provisions of national sports policy.

“We received the copy of the judgement on Monday”, the Director General of Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), Brig. Saulat Abbas, confirmed on Tuesday.

Justice Shakoor Paracha of Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench, granted the stay on a petition filed by POA against Pakistan Sports Board, challenging the p rovisions of the sports policy under which an incumbent office-bearer could not run for a third consecutive four-year term in any of the top three slots.

The two counsels had completed their arguments before the learned judge on July 10 after which the judgement was due.

Nawaz Qasoori represented the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General, Chaudhry Sultan Mehmood, appeared on behalf of the respondents.

The petitioner had contended that limiting the tenure of the sports policy, notification for which was issued on Aug 17 last year, is in contravention of the fundamental rights.

The respondent had pleaded that PSB ordinance 1961 gives it the right to frame necessary rules in accordance with its charter.—APP
