LAHORE, July 21: Country-wide rain on Monday kept mercury down but raised humidity and fear of flash floods.
River Indus was in low flood with a flow of 261,000 cusecs at Tarbela and so was Chenab at Marala and Khanki, but all other rivers were flowing normal.
Maximum temperature in Lahore on Monday was recorded 30.3 C and minimum 26.5C, with 84 per cent humidity in the morning and 88 per cent in the evening.
According to the Met office, Shakargarh received 194mm rain, followed by 118mm by Kund, Jassar 112mm, Mangla 102mm, Sialkot 92mm, Ura 91mm, Islamabad 94mm, Zafarwal 59mm, Kotli 57mm, Daggar 56mm, Sohawa 55mm, Kakul 51, Tarbela and Domel 41mm each, Shinkiari 40mm, Muzaffarabad 37mm, Rawlakot 36mm, Kamra and Jhelum 35mm each, Risalpur 33mm, Kallar 26mm and Peshawar 25mm.
By Monday evening, Lahore city received 8mm, Faisalabad 32mm, Bahawalnagar 4mm, Dera Ismail Khan traces and Malam Jabba 33mm.
The Met office forecast widespread rain of moderate intensity with isolate heavy falls over the upper catchment of the rivers Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum along with northern and northeastern Punjab. Scattered moderate rain with isolated heavy falls may occur over Hazara, Peshawar, Kohat, Sargodha and Dera Ismail Khan division and northeastern Balochistan. A few thunder showers of light to moderate intensity with one or two heavy falls are expected over Dera Ghazi Khan and Faisalabad divisions.
Meanwhile, Sunday’s westerly wave over northern Iran and adjoining Afghanistan moved eastwards and laid over Malakand division. Seasonal low also hovered over southern Afghanistan and Balochistan. Moderate monsoon current from the Arabian sea also reached Punjab and Kashmir.
Meanwhile, people experienced usual problem of traffic jams due to rain. The city district government failed to make proper arrangement to drain water which caused traffic jams in the main city since most of the rain (8mm) fell there with only traces in the airport area.
