ISLAMABAD, July 21: The Kashmiri people do not accept the agreement on expansion of the Mangla Dam and will continue to oppose this plan.

This was stated by the PPP Azad Kashmir president, Sultan Mehmood, while talking to mediapersons here on Monday.

The PPP leader alleged that the AJK president, Sardar Sikander Hayat Khan, was eyeing at Rs64 billion by endorsing expansion of the dam.

He said the Kashmiris did not accept the agreement signed by the chief secretary, Shahid Rafi; ministry of Kashmir affairs secretary and Wapda chairman.

As many as 7,707 people, who were affected by the construction of Mangla Dam in 1962, had still not been given land or compensation, he added.

“The expansion of Mangla Dam is a conspiracy to create abhorrence in the hearts of Kashmiris against Pakistan by initiating forcible expansion of the dam.”

The government must take the residents of Mirpur in confidence on this issue by inviting concerned people and politicians for talks to draw up an agreement, Mr Sultan said.
