LARKANA: Irrigation staff on Thursday foiled an attempt of a dejected woman to commit suicide by jumping into Rice Canal near Naudero along with her two children.

Rasheeda Jeho, 40, along with Nida, 7, and Naveed, 8, had come to the Naudero regulator to jump into the canal with her children to commit suicide, said SHO Sartaj Jagirani of the Naudero police station.

Local people and the irrigation staff came close to her and foiled her attempt, he said.

The woman later told the police that she decided to commit a joint suicide when she failed to arrange the dowry for her daughter, Nadia, whose marriage was fixed for Aug 10.

She said her husband, a retired employee of the railways department, was unable to arrange the dowry.
