CW Games contingent to arrive in Islamabad today

LAHORE: The Pakistan contingent which took part in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will arrive in Islamabad on Tuesday.

The 63-member Pakistan contingent featured in the Games which are held for former British colonies and claimed three silver medals — one each in boxing, judo and wrestling — and one bronze in wrestling to end 23rd on the medals table.

Pakistan also took part in badminton, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, table tennis and weightlifting events but failed to secure a gold medal.

The contingent made the trip to Glasgow amid great uncertainty, as it only received the a green signal to travel from the Lahore High Court (LHC) just two days before their departure.

Meanwhile, according to a press release issued by the Pakistan Sports Board, Federal Minister for IPC, Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada stated that Pakistan sports were at a standstill during the last two years owing to the Pakistan Olympic Association’s conflict and so no effective training could be organised for the athletes.

But he added that the participants did their best despite “their problems in training”. A reception in the honour of the contingent will be organised in Islamabad on Aug 8.

every sector of pakistan is under developed.. Sports, Agriculture, Industries, PIA, Steel Mill, power and even our movies are not seen within the country. Where we are standing and wht we should do???

Horrible performance shown by Pakistan at 2014 Commonwealth Games. Even failed to win single gold. When no proper preparation is made then how our team will give its best. Government should stop interfering in sporting affairs as it has done great damage. Sad to say prospects do not look good even for 2014 Asian games.

@kalim Its the price Pakistan is paying for their obsession in getting Kashmir independent! How will Pakistan gain anything if Kashmir becomes independent can someone explain to the people of Pak and the world? And if Pakistan top brass thinks independence means Indian Kashmir joining Azad J&K then have a relook- ! or a rethink!

@Debbie .. There were 11 women and 37 male competitors. Please follow the entire games before commenting unnecessary. few of the Pakistani squad members are expatriates and will not make journey to Pakistan with the contingent.

@VGP How ignorant. Grow up. @Debbie- Pakistan have a Cricket team, so there is no reason for not having annyone for Track/field/Swimming events. Maybe they are just not good enough and don't want to face the embarrassement of coming last (personally i think they should compete- its the taking part)

@ahmedj what's the alternative please. If you don't expose your athletes at these events how are you going to raise your profile. Scot Erraid, Scotland's 13 years old swimmer won a bronze. So don't put your own compatriots down.

@Naseem She was literally thrown in the deep end. Compare Areeba's timings with Scot Erraid. Areeba couldn't qualify in her initial qualifying heats and remained 7th and last. Where as Erraid swam in the finals and won a medal. What are SAF and other regional games for? What are our sports board officials doing on their revolving office sofa chairs?
