ARUNDEL, July 19: Wasim Jaffer’s unbeaten 58 guided India ‘A’ to 195 for three at tea on the first day of their three-day tour match against South Africa here on Saturday.

But in what was South Africa’s last match before Thursday’s first Test against England at Edgbaston, pace bowler Monde Zondeki took a wicket with the last ball before tea to send the Proteas into the interval on a high.

Left-hander Hemang Bedani had made 23 when he drove loosely at Zondeki and edged through to wicket-keeper Mark Boucher. He faced 70 balls including one six and two fours.

India ‘A’ started the second session on 99 for one with captain Shiv Sunder Das 23 not out and Jaffer five not out.

But former captain Shaun Pollock restored order when, with the second ball of his second spell he had Das caught behind for 33 by Boucher, India ‘A’ 144 for two in the 35th over.

Das was clearly unhappy with Mervyn Kitchen’s decision, lingering in the crease for several seconds.

Earlier left-handed opener Gautam Gambhir got India ‘A’ off to a solid start with a brisk 64 before he fell to Peterson.

Gambhir faced 69 balls including 11 fours on a placid pitch which more than justified Das’s decision to field first.—AFP
