THATTA, July 19: A recently-completed water supply scheme in the Mirpur Bathoro town has proved to be counter-productive as garbage has mixed with water in the reservoir after rainwater damaged its pipeline.

Talking to this correspondent, Mirpur Bathoro Union Council Nazim Mohammad Ali Khwaja said the UC had unanimously adopted a resolution against the public health engineering department for using substandard material in the project.

The executive engineer, public health engineering department, Thatta, Shamsuddin Shaikh, said the project execution staff of the department opted for laying down the two-kilometre-long water supply pipeline through a land which was claimed by Haji Khadim, who resisted the execution of the scheme by moving the Sindh ombudsman and other authorities.

Mr Shamsuddin admitted that more than 45 per cent of the fund meant for the project was wasted by vested interests.

A councillor of the Mirpur Bathoro Union Council told the engineer that owing to the situation, a skin disease and diarrhoea had spread in the town and its adjoining areas.

GRAVEYARD: The Sonda Graveyard, located on the National Highway, some 40 kilometres off Thatta, has been submerged under rainwater, causing damage to the 300-year-old site, having crafted stone graves of various dynasties.
