KARACHI, July 14: Karachiites are increasingly inflicted with conjunctivitis (eye infections) due to high temperatures coupled with scattered rain-fall and frequent exposure to contaminated water.

Ophthalmologists cited this to be seasonal outbreak registered each year in the city with the rising temperature and fast approaching monsoon.

Maintaining that the condition manifested through severe irritation with eye getting red and a sticky discharge is also noticed, they said that the condition was self limiting and did not need any medication.

To seek some relief, the affectees may wash their eyes with ice cold water and also resort to ice cube massage, but no self- medication be resorted, as this could lead to serious conditions.

However, if the condition persists for more than four days, a qualified doctor must be immediately consulted for proper treatment.

Doctors said that conjunctivitis was contagious and a single incident in the family could enhance the chances of its spread to the other members of family. Hence, it was strongly advised that patient should not be allowed to share towels and bed with anybody, they said.

Due consideration must be given to improved hygienic conditions and cleanliness and the infected people should preferably use disposable tissue to wipe his eyes.—APP
