HYDERABAD, July 14: Taluka Nazim Latifabad Abdul Jabbar Khan has appealed to the irrigation authorities to lower the flow of the Phulelli canal — at least for two days — to drain out stagnant rainwater into it.

In a statement on Monday he said if the water supply in the canal was not lowered then the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) would not be able to dispose of rainwater through the Darya Khan pumping station as a result the water would return to the lines, choking them completely and inundating main roads.

Mr Khan said the situation on the Autobhan road near the Sindh Regimental Center (SRC) was very bad as water was still standing there and it could not be disposed of as a huge quantity of water was already present at the pumping stations.

Agreeing with the contention of the chief engineer Kotri Barrage, Izhar Khan, that the growers needed water for their crops, he pointed out that when there was not a drop of water in canal the growers were making hue and cry but now the situation was quite encouraging.

Conceding that the disposal of effluent in the canal would pollute its water, the Taluka Nazim said, there was no other way out.

He cautioned that in case there were more monsoon rains, the situation in the city and Latifabad would be very dangerous and several localities would be completely submerged.

WORK INSPECTED: The district coordination officer (DCO), Hyderabad, Mukhtar Ahmed Aziz, on Monday visited the SM Bund, near Bhanote, and inspected the on-going work of strengthening the embankments of the River Indus.

The chief engineer, Sukkur Barrage, Noor Mohammad Shah, in his briefing informed the DCO that in order to strengthen the Bhanote Bund, the Sindh government had released Rs5 million.

He said plugging was going on round the clock and 150 staff had been deployed on the embankment.

He said emergency material had also been sent to the Bhanote Bund to meet any eventuality.

He said that 2,000 truckloads of stone were needed to strengthen the embankment, which would cost Rs15 million.

The DCO advised the chief engineer to complete the work as soon as possible.

CASE: The district and sessions judge, Hussain Bux Khoso, on Friday directed the DPO, operations, to register a case against excise inspector Syed Altaf Hussain and excise police constable Abdul Jabbar of the divisional intelligence branch for implicating a man in a false case and false testimonies before the court.
