SANGHAR, July 14: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal has demanded that the greater Thal canal project should be shelved as it will destroy agriculture of Sindh.
Speaking at a seminar on “Problems of Sindh and their Solution”, Sindh MMA president Maulana Asadullah Bhutto said the Thal canal was being constructed to irrigate lands of army generals and to create differences between Sindh and Punjab.
The MMA leader said the government was not interested in resolving problems of people. He claimed that traders, farmers, labourers and youths were dissatisfied with the government’s polices.
He said on the one hand government employees were not being paid their salaries and on the other, more and more ministers and advisers were being inducted into the Sindh cabinet.
Mr Bhutto said the Legal Framework Order was an important national issue but it should not be an obstacle in resolving problems of the masses.
About recognizing Israel, the MMA leader said President Gen Pervez Musharraf was talking of recognizing Israel under the US pressure but he would never talk about brutalities inflicted by Israel on the Palestinians.
He said the opposition would launch a protest movement if the government sent troops to Iraq.
Mr Bhutto said there was no justification for Gen Musharraf to remain in power after the last year election.
HIGHWAYMEN: Two highwaymen — Wazir Ali Mahar and Amir Ali Mahar — caught red-handed while looting a Karachi-bound coach, were released by the Gambat police on Friday night.
The coach, coming from Sadiqabad, was stopped by 10 armed men near Gambat town, Khairpur district, and looted at least 50 passengers at gunpoint.
They snatched gold ornaments, cash, wristwatches and other valuables worth lakhs of rupees. The two bandits were caught by the police trying to flee the scene while eight others managed to flee.
Later, the police released the culprits and then registered a case against them.
