KARACHI, July 14: Sewerage system in Lyari Town may collapse, once again, because of frequent power failures in the area.

Residents of affected areas complained that intermittent power suspension for long duration had become a regular feature in many parts of the Town, for the past two weeks, making things worse for them.

Since Lyari is situated below the sea level, sewage cannot be disposed of without pumping, which depends on uninterrupted power supply with a normal voltage.

Inquiries indicated that the KESC had so far done nothing to avoid the possible collapse, despite repeated complaints lodged by the residents of the areas.

A resident said the situation had aggravated in Baghdadi, Shah Beg Lane and Darayabad Union Council areas, where power suspension had become a routine.

As a result sewage continues to overflow on different roads in the Town. The affected areas include the Shah Latif Bhittai Road, Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road, Fidha Husain Shaika Road, Karabai Karimji Road, D.D Chaudhry Road and the adjoining areas of Lea and Khadda markets.

The residents said that work of disposing of stagnant rain water and sewage which was geared up a couple of days ago was disrupted when power failure again occurred on Sunday in Baghdadi and Darayabad Union Council areas.

Meanwhile, the representatives of community based organizations, blame the local bodies members of the areas for failing to deliver.

They said the growing problems of electricity, water supply, insanitary conditions and dilapidated roads had made life miserable, adding that “people are left with no other option, but to resort to agitation.”

A senior representative of an NGO remarked: “Lyari’s broken down and unlit roads, overflowing gutters, rampant encroachments, unauthorized complexes, unemployed youths, and crowded and pollution-filled environment provides the background for “recent trends of violence and agitation.”
