JALALABAD, July 13: Two Afghan soldiers were wounded in a skirmish with Pakistani troops along Afghanistan’s eastern border with Pakistan, military officials said Sunday.

“There was fresh fighting for a few hours late on Saturday between members of the Afghan border patrol and the Pakistani military,” Haji Ibrar, a security official said here.

“There was light weapons fire on both sides. Two of our men were injured, they received treatment and their lives are not in danger,” he said.

He said the fighting prompted residents of the two nearby villages to flee their homes.

Tribal leaders in the surrounding province of Nangarhar, particularly tribesmen living near the border, accuse Pakistani troops of infiltrating “up to 40 kilometres” into Afghan territory for the past three weeks.

During this period, Pakistani troops, Afghan soldiers and Pakistani tribal militia have been clashing almost daily over disputed land.

Taliban arms seized: Afghan forces on Sunday seized 300 rocket-propelled grenades and dozens of anti-tank mines in a raid on a Taliban hideout near the Pakistan border, an Afghan commander said in Spin Boldak.

The weapons had been brought to the suspected rebel training camp, 10 km from the town of Spin Boldak, for attacks on government and US-led forces, said the commander, who did not want to be identified.

Taliban fighters guarding the camp escaped the government swoop, he said.—Agencies
