Akber topples top seed Haris

KARACHI, July 11: Third seed Akber Patudi created major upset when he downed top seed Haris Iltifat in the semifinal of Juniors Under-18 singles of Pakistan Talent Hunt Tennis Championship at Karachi Gymkhana on Friday.

Akber outlasted Haris 7-6, 6-3 in a match that lasted for almost two hours. He will now meet Adnan Khan in the final on Sunday. The first set was long marathon affair virtually decided the outcome of the match with Akber kept his nerves while Haris committed errors at crucial points.

Hareem Fatima kept her hopes alive of winning the girls under-19 title after she whitewashed Zainie Jamali 6-0,6-0 in a totally one-sided semifinal. Zainie was utterly outclassed by her rival.

In the junior’s Under-18 doubles Adnan Khan and Akber Patudi secured their berth in the final when they easily outclassed Hammad and Talha 6-0,6-0.

Later Saad and Samad outlasted Anil and Robin 7-5,7-6 to set a a date in the final against Adnan and Akber.

Hyderabad’s Saad Baloch and Haris Iltifat advanced into the semifinals of the boys under-16 after socring convincing victories over Ghulam Abbas and Shakoor Khan in straight sets.

Girls Under-18 semifinal: Hareem Fatima bt Zainie Jamali 6-0,6-0

Juniors Under-18 Doubles semifinals: Adnan-Akber bt Hammad-Talha 6-0,6-0; Samad-Saad bt Anil-Robin 7-5,7-6

Boys Under-16 Quarterfinals: Haris bt Shakoor Khan 6-4,6-2; Saad Baloch bt Gulam Abbas 6-2,6-2.—PPI
