Geo/Jang group tenders apology to ISI, armed forces

ISLAMABAD: In the backdrop of an attack on life of Hamid Mir – senior journalist and anchorperson – Geo TV network and Jang media group on Monday tendered apology to Pakistan’s armed forces and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for hurling allegations on ISI chief Lt Gen Zaheerul Islam.
In a published apology in English daily The News and Urdu newspaper Jang, the media group clarified that they were respectful of Pakistani forces and its leadership.
“We have always appreciated their sacrifices to safeguard our borders and the security of our country,” said the apology letter.
The media group clarified that the allegations were not hurled by the institution but by Hamid Mir himself and later repeated by his brother soon after the attack in Karachi.
Mir had repeatedly held ISI or some elements within its ranks for orchestrating the attack on his life. The senior anchorperson had said in his first media interaction that he was being threatened to leave the country by the same elements who he alleged were behind the attack.
“After serious retrospection, editorial debates, feedback and engagement with all parties, directly and indirectly, we have concluded that our coverage immediately after the tragic and unnerving attack on Hamid Mir on April 19 was excessive, distressful and emotional,” said the group in today's apology.
The media giant accepted that the coverage of the incident was “misleading, disproportionate and inappropriate giving impression of a campaign,” although it followed current media practices including the version of armed forces with photo of DG ISPR televised repeatedly.
The group apologised to the ISI, its chief Lt Gen Zaheerul Islam, his family, Pakistan Army and large number of television viewers for causing “deep hurt.”

"It is never too late to mend" is a well known proverb. GEO and JANG administration's apology should be accepted by those who were targeted. One thing should be noted that media policy should be formulated and PEMRA should be efficient enough to take action as and when any breach of discipline is noticed.

Mr Ansar Abassi said it was an "editorial Judgment" I wonder what would he say now. in this appeal or whatever Geo has acknowledged their Blunder or crime.. so what about their Principal stance they were for 3-4 weaks adamant that they are stick to their Principal stance.. Now what about that Principal Stance.
Last but not the least all Journos shpuld learn one thing that their Media houses will leave them if they feel the heat.

An apology is good but not the answer - this is a time when all stakeholders must do their job - PERMA should clarify rules and improve its process of accountability, government should look deep into the finances and intentions of Geo and Jang group, ISI should provide any intelligence they may have on the culprits and their motives, Geo and Jang group must come clean and explain how they intend to do things differently, the three judge panel set up to investigate this incident must conduct a thorough and impartial investigation making sure its findings are shared with the public.

This diplomatic s-called "APOLOGY" should be seen as acceptance of a grave offence which was committed by Geo Television. This instrument is enough to prove that Geo committed an act of defaming Armed Forces of Pakistan which in short means destabilizing Pakistan.Look at the way International media pointed fingers towards ISI after this terrible broadcast.Furthermore,the o-called apology is written in a very crooked manner and note not a single time "PAKISTAN" is mentioned in the script. Beside this highly deplorable act Geo also can not clear itself from the act of blasphemy committed in a morning show.These Acts ,once committed,are punishable under Law and simply by accepting it does not,by any means,clear Geo-Jang Group, the Law must take its on course & Geo's transmission should be suspended till the court reaches a judgement.

It is belated but finally Geo and Jang have realised their mistake and tendered an apology for the irresponsible and immature reporting of the attack on Hamid Mir. Now I appeal to the government to take steps to defuse the tension which is plaguing Pakistani media these days. I may add that the code of conduct for media houses should include clauses that prevent them from acting like NGOs to promote any specific agenda that may endanger the security of the country. Aman Ki Asha is a good gesture to promote relations between India and Pakistan but it should be run as an NGO funded by the citizens of both the countries. A media house being a business enterprise should not invest money in a venture that is of no financial benefit to company.

This is an apology for an apology. It exposes the calibre and calibration of the editorial team. They have come to "appreciate the services of the Armed Forces" after extensive debate and consultations within and without, and not by instinct. If this is the reality of the biggest media group in Pakistan, one can only pray to God to protect this country from it.

Geo is my fav. In my opinion they did do wrong by blasting ISI without proof. In my opinion they should be fined and given a warning.Everyone who talks about closes Geo should also think about the thousands of Geo workers and their dependants. What is their fault ?
Mubashir Luqman is a hopeless case, playing the part of a papakutni. I have stopped watching ARY now.
ISI should also realize that internationally it is starting to look bad. The issue against Geo beginning to be raised on international forums now. Specially after an apology the hounding of Geo will have negative effects.

This is such a biased reporting by Dawn group, Not giving due coverage to PTI jalsa in Faisalabad, the demands that resounded from there and the magnanimity of it. If thousands and sometimes millions are protesting for something,it is worth all the reporting and impact, How could the media ignore the voice of its own citizens,and shunning as though completely ignoring their demands?? its simply their voice being suffocated! its suffocating on part of Dawn Media Group, disappointed in it!

No apology should be accepted by the ISI and army, the media group has hurt the national institution of Pakistan who protects Pakistan and its people with their life, the media group should be clearly shut down by PEMRA, to teach a lesson to all the other media groups out there, if they'd did this mistake and this should be the penalty for them as well.
And personally i don't like Geo, because it was also involved in rigging of May 2013 election, by declaring PMLN winner on just 15 pc vote count at 3 pm whereas other channels were getting result of vote counts and in reward PMLN gave Geo employee Najam sethi the chairmanship of PCB, so this media group should be totally closed down.

Army ISI and other forces institutions have sacrifices for the National Security and sovereignty of country. These two day kids grown out in the streets of Delhi would never be allowed to challenge National Security. Since banning media group is not good either but now they have crossed the limits and for a proper lesson for each mental character it is essential to make this group a lesson for all. Pakistan is not a toy that every one can play with it for their cheap bosses.

For eight hours non stop Geo & Jang group made serious allegations against ISI while Hamid Mir was lying in hospital unconscious in hospital fighting for his life. Now that it is official and the group has formerly apologized, PEMRA's job of establishing the fact has been made easy. With this, the next step should be penalizing Geo as per PEMRA rules and regulations. After all, a wrong practiced has been committed which has now been admitted by the practitioner. Good or Bad, for every action, there are consequences.
Let the rule of law prevail.

They committed a great sin against our sensitive agencies......Geo TV channel logo should be jailed and given 200 lashes and we need to cut off G and O off the logo. So that other media logos will learn a lesson and remember the lesson when they see the e channel.

"Done can not be undone" same principle is followed in Law, heinous Crime was committed repeatedly for hours on Geo, it remains to be seen what course the Law takes, it is a Test case for Judiciary. Did they apologized by not showing their might on the borders when enemies entered the settled area near academy with full military power, hunt down their target and get back to their side without being challenged.

Making an open apology is a wise and generous step taken by Geo/Jang. Hope that teaches a lesson to the rest of Pakistani media that they are not above the Law of the Land. The Army and ISI are to be commended for taking a legal and not threatening course. Now the Nawaz government should play its role to diffuse and bury the issue.

We the common viewers of various media channels have learned something from all this fuss about Geo TV's so called 'unethical' and 'unprincipled' telecast in which it arrogantly challenged the most powerful institution of the country. This institution has taught lesson to the most powerful media group and brought it to its knees. This episode also exposed the character of certain media channels who added insult to the injury to their chief competitor by employing every possible below the belt blows.
In this entire controversy, establishment emerged as victor whereas media emerged as a loser. And of course, it is media whose follies brought it a bad name. I hope our media channels will learn the lesson from this entire episode and will follow the norms of ethical and responsible reporting and protect themselves from becoming the laughing stock in the eyes of their viewers.

In this apology too Geo is lying. bcoz in the allegations after attack on Mir, Geo had directly nemed the Chief of ISI as the man behind this attack but in apology Geo is saying that they had said that some elements of ISI were behind this attack on mir.

Geo has been accusing people and leaders without any proof just to be number one, they are Anti Pakistan and have played a role in being bias and unjust, it is time they be taken to task as per rules. A simple apology is not enough. They have caused a much bigger crime than what they are pretending. All their anchors including Kamran Khan, Amir Liaqat and Hamid Mir are a bunch of fraudster and liars.

I dont mind and don't see anything wrong with Hamid Mir or any person blaming someone if they think they are threatened. But it has to be genuine suspicion not a motivated one. If it was a motivated one, he and whole group should be punished one severely. If it wasn't motivated and proven a genuine then its a basic right of people to question anyone. Hazart Umar (RAW) was questioned on many occasions by people despite being Kkalipha. In my view Geo has done many more serious crimes than this for which it should be punished. One of its major crimes is morally corrupting our society and dragging us away from our cultural and religious values. This for me is more serious then what they have done now. But problem lies with GOvt, Govt should give authority and freedom to PEMRA to decide and punish. But our Govt is scared of it, as it fears it might open some secrets which will be bad for their power and seat.

@Imran GEO has taken a total 180 degrees turn, now they are trying to show support to ISI and Government, PEMRA is delaying the decision and if Nawaz S is unable to stop GEO he is gone and Imran will come as a winner as lot of people like me who were earlier not supporting Imran are with him due to GEO unnecessarily accusing PTI
