LAHORE, July 10: A murder accused was shot dead by his rival in police custody on Model Town court premises on Thursday.

A police constable suffered injuries in the incident, and he was stated to be in critical condition at the Lahore General Hospital.

Muhammad Ali alias Sohail Kana, 30, a resident of Lohari, was sent to jail in a murder case. Besides, he was charged with possessing illegal arms.

The police escorted Ali to the court of a judicial magistrate for proceedings of the illegal weapons’ possession case. He was being taken back to the jail by the police after his case was adjourned when a man opened fire on him.

Ali and constable Basharat Ali suffered severe hurts and were taken to hospital where the former died after first-aid. The policeman was fighting for life at the hospital till last reports came in.

The police claimed to have arrested the killer. Identified as Mir Wali Khan, the arrested man told the police that the deceased had killed his cousin Hamid Ali last year, and he had exacted revenge.
