Jirga settles murder dispute

A tribal court (jirga) held in Ali Akbar Bhangwar village near Bakhshapur town of Kandhkot Kashmore district on Monday settled a years-old dispute over killing of a villager allegedly by two policemen.

The villager, Manzoor Bhangwar, had received gunshot wounds in firing by a police party led by former SHO Arbab Soomro during a raid on the village, where a bull race was under way.

The Bhangwar community had been pressuring the area police to produce the suspected policemen in a jirga but one of the suspected policemen, Sohrab Noonari, avoided appearing in any jirga to defend himself. He was shot dead some six months ago.

On Monday, the matter was taken to a jirga chaired by Sardar Ahmed Ali Bhangwar, PPP MPA Dr Sohrab Sarki and Sardar Saddam Hussain Burirro. The remaining suspects and the aggrieved side appeared in the tribal court.

After hearing both sides, the jirga found policemen Rasool Bukhsh and Jan Mohammad Burirro, both residents of Thull, guilty of murder. They were ordered to pay a fine of Rs2.4 million to the aggrieved side.

The policemen paid Rs500,000 on the spot to the heirs of Manzoor Bhangwar through Sardar Ahmed Ali Bhangwar and undertook to pay off Rs1.7 million in three instalments within the next three months. An amount of Rs200,000 was waived.
