DERA GHAZI KHAN, July 9: The incidence of crime has attained alarming proportions in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur districts.

People are feeling insecure amid a large number of incidents involving kidnapping-for-ransom and murder of police officials in Dera Ghazi Khan and specially in Rajanur, which also falls within the jurisdiction of Dera police along with Layyah and Muzaffargarh.

According to the police report for first six months of the year, 158 murders were committed against 124 last year. There were 164 murder attempts against 143 last year. Three riots were reported, against one last year.

As many as 23 policemen and 11 other government servants were attacked against a total of 19 attacks on government officials last year.

As many as 213 kidnappings for ransom were reported. Thirty-three incidents of dacoity/armed robbery occurred this year against only 13 last year.

In the first six months of 2003, 121 robberies were committed on roads against 69 last year. The incidence of burglary also increased with 332 incidents against 230 last year.

It is being demanded by people of Dera Ghazi Khan that security measures should be adopted at the main gate of district courts, where two incidents of killing of litigants took place this year.
