ISLAMABAD, July 9: Myanmar’s Foreign Minister U. Win Aung called on President Gen Pervez Musharraf at the Aiwan-i-Sadar on Wednesday.

Mr Aung, who came as a special envoy of Myanmar’s head of state, delivered a message of the latter to President Musharraf.

He expressed his government’s gratitude for the assistance given by Pakistan to Myanmar in its development effort, and affirmed its desire to further strengthen bilateral relations.

He applauded the contribution made by President Musharraf in promoting regional peace and stability, especially in the context of India and Afghanistan.

The special envoy reaffirmed Myanmar’s full support for Pakistan’s membership of the Asean Regional Forum (ARF) and Full Dialogue Partnership with ASEAN.

The president recalled his visit to Yangon in 2001, which had “imparted a fresh dynamism to the development of bilateral relations.”

Mr Aung also called on Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali and conveyed Myanmar leadership’s greetings to the latter.

He recounted the efforts being made by the Myanmar government “to promote national reconciliation and socio-economic cohesion.”

The two exchanged views on the global and regional situation.

Mr Jamali said Pakistan looked forward to bolstering its ties with Myanmar, especially further development of mutually beneficial economic and commercial cooperation.

The PM accepted with thanks the invitation to visit Myanmar. —APP
