KARACHI, July 8: Sindh governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, who is also the chancellor of public sector varsities in the province, has stressed the need for devising a placement system for the graduating students.

He was presiding over the 11th senate meeting of the NED University of Engineering and Technology at its premises on Tuesday.

The governor said that the federal government, human resource development and other ministries would have to contemplate on permanent basis in this connection. He assured the participants of the meeting that he would do, whatever he could, for the framing of an effective and result oriented strategy.

Dr Ibad was of the view that after acquiring education for years and putting in a lot of efforts, the graduates remained jobless or change profession. The entire exercise, thus, becomes useless, he remarked.

He opined that it would not be appropriate to fix the number of seats in various disciplines in different departments and that these should be changed in accordance with the demands and needs. The number of seats should be determined in accordance with the market needs, he added.

Dr Ibad also called for keeping in view the spirit of competition. He said that the educational institutions and universities were meant for students and their very purpose was to impart quality education. In this regard, he said, the development of institutions and maintenance of discipline ultimately benefit students.

He also called for solution of the problems pertaining to the Dawood College of Engineering and Technology and directed that every possible step should be taken in this direction.

He expressed pleasure at the award of ISO 9000 certificate to the NED University. “We are proud of the well-reputation of the NED university internationally,” he said.

At the meeting, the annual report was presented by the NED vice-chancellor, Engr Abul Kalam. The university’s annual budget for the fiscal 2003-04 was also approved at the meeting.—APP
