KASUR, July 7: At least 152 farmers, including a general councillor and a labour councillor, were booked on Monday for stealing canal water in Chhanga Manga.

A team of the Irrigation department, headed by Changa Manga and Phoolnagar canal SDOs, conducted raids in Sherpur, Ghumankey and Khankey Morr villages. The raiding team caught red-handed 122 farmers in Sherpur, 22 in Khankey Morr and eight, including councillor Hafiz Khurram and labour councillor Rafiq Ahmad, while stealing water.

According to the Irrigation department, all the accused had been involved in the canal water theft since long, but could not be arrested due to political pressure.

Police said Naeem had quarrelled with Abbas Khichi a few days ago, but the elders of the village resolved their dispute. On Monday, Naeem along with his companions Mukhtar, Khalid Masih and Boota Masih were going to fields when Abbas Khichi and his five accomplices opened indiscriminate fire on them. As a result, Naeem died on the spot while his three companions received serious bullet wounds. Later, Khalid Masih and Boota Masih were shifted to Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, in critical condition.
