PESHAWAR, July 6: The NWFP government would evaluate the effectiveness of the on-farm-water-management project under which multi-million dollar investment has been made by the international lending institutions during the last four years, according to official sources.

The provincial government making arrangements to get the evaluation done by a private consultancy firm to carry out a base-line survey in the districts falling under the purview of the project, sources said.

The investment has been made, over the years, by the World Bank and Asian Development Bank to promote water management practices and ensure effective use of water in the water-deficient areas of the Frontier province.

Scores of tubewells had been installed and water courses were constructed to ensure efficient use of water for irrigation purposes with the broad objective of improving the state of agriculture sector.

Under the evaluation study data would be compiled and on-the-ground position would be evaluated to determine that how much the project had been successful in achieving its prime objective, sources said.

Applications would be invited soon for pre-qualification of bids, sources said.

The estimated cast of the evaluation study, involving a base-line survey in the project areas, has been calculated at over Rs1m.

The NWFP government, sources said, had necessitated to evaluate the effectiveness of the project as part of its efforts to win funding from the donor agencies for the development of the provincial agriculture sector.
