PESHAWAR/NOWSHERA: Pakistan People’s Party workers on Friday observed the 35th death anniversary of their founding chairman Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in the provincial capital.

The party workers urged the PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Asif Ali Zardari and other central leaders to take steps for holding intra-party elections to strengthen democracy in the party and its reorganisation.

Main event of the day was held at Peshawar Press Club organised by People’s Doctors Forum. Those who spoke on the occasion included among others PDF’s president Dr Nisar Khan, PPP’s provincial coordination secretary Syed Ayub Shah, provincial vice president Azam Khan Afridi, Yawar Naseer, Dr Ishaq, Tahir Abbas, labour wing comrade Anwar Zeb, Zulqarnain Shah and Jamal Khattak.

A large number of PPP activists and workers and students also attended the seminar.

The speakers said ZAB had focused his attention on resolution of problems facing the poor people. They said conspiracies failed to remove the PPP’s slogan of roti, kapra makan (bread, clothing and house) from the minds of people.

They said the history of Pakistan People’s Party was full with numerous sacrifices, as the party leaders, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, his daughter Benazir Bhutto, sons Murtaza Bhutto and Shahanwaz Bhutto gave their lives for the sake of democracy.

They added that judiciary had given verdict against a leader who had played important role in making the country’s constitution.

The PPP leaders said ZAB impressed the world through his vision and ideology, and raised voice for backward and downtrodden segments of the society.

The participants alleged that ministers in the last PPP-led government indulged in massive corruption and sold the name of Bhuttos, putting at stake party’s future.

Meanwhile, an event held at the Gathering Hall in the Peshawar city was disrupted after a clash among the workers. Some workers started shouting against leaders, while another group rose against them, triggering a clash.

Workers alleged that former PPP ministers served their own interests and didn’t pay any heed towards strengthening the party and welfare of the workers.

However, PPP’s Peshawar city PPP president Zulfiqar Afghani managed to pacify the charged workers.Meanwhile, two separate events were held in Nowshera district on the death anniversary of late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto reflecting strong differences among party leaders.

A gathering was held at Khattak Bagh organised by district president Engineer Tariq Khattak. Noted among the participants were former PPP general secretary Mian Muzaffar Shah, founder member and close friend of ZAB, Mir Haider Khan, Nowshera general secretary Mian Sajjid Ali Shah, district Information secretary Saleem Kokar and other office bearers.

Similarly, another event was organised by former provincial minister Laiqat Shabab at his residence, which was attended among others by former provincial president Raheemdad Khan.

Addressing the gathering, Muzaffar Shah said ZAB not only gave the country constitution but also united the Islamic countries. “The government should not provide safe passage to dictator Pervez Musharraf who was facing article six of the constitution for high treason first time in the history of Pakistan,” he said, adding Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto had given nuclear bomb to Pakistan for which he was hanged through a judicial conspiracy.
