LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi has summoned head coach Moin Khan, captain Mohammad Hafeez and chief cricket consultant Zaheer Abbas on Thursday to explain reasons for national team’s exit from the World Twenty20.

Sethi picked Moin as head coach after receiving recommendations from the coach finding committee which had Javed Miandad and Wasim Akram as members. The committee had also named former Test captain Waqar Younis as alternative of Moin.

The chairman also introduced a new post by appointing former great batsman Zaheer Abbas as chief cricket consultant.

Sethi met domestic cricket director Intikhab Alam, National Cricket Academy head Haroon-ur-Rashid, former chief selector Azhar Khan and chief operating officer Subhan Ahmad on Wednesday before his meeting with the ‘Big Three’ (Moin, Hafeez and Zaheer).

“In today’s (Wednesday) meeting with Intikhab, Haroon, Azhar and Subhan, the chairman discussed the performance of the team in the World T20 and got the briefing to ascertain causes of defeat, fixation of responsibility and future course of action,” a PCB spokesman told Dawn.

“The chairman has also invited Moin, Hafeez and Zaheer to discuss the reasons,” he said.

Overall performance of Pakistan in the World T20 remained below par as Australia were the only prominent team which they had managed to defeat while losing to India and the West Indies.

Meanwhile, Sethi in his Tweeter message has said he would make all persons who were responsible for the defeat accountable, but at the same time he showed a soft corner for the team by saying they were ranked fifth in the T20 format.

He also tried to pacify emotions by saying that the green-shirts had earlier defeated India in an Asia Cup match.

Pakistan’s batting performance remained miserable at the World T20 with only once century coming from Ahmad Shahzad and a half century by Umar Akmal.

Other batsmen like Hafeez (55 runs), Shoaib Malik (52 runs), Shahid Afridi (68 runs), Sohaib Maqsood (45 runs) and Kamran Akmal (48 runs) also failed to live up to expectations.

The bowlers did not impress either.

It is the first time that the 2009 champions Pakistan could not reach the semi-finals of the World T20.
