HYDERABAD, July 4: The chairman, Sindh Taraqqi Passand Party, Dr Qadir Magsi, has said that now there was no turning back from the struggle against the greater Thal canal and the rulers would have to shelve this project.

He was talking to various delegations which called on him at the Sindh Taraqqi Passand House here on Thursday.

He said the greater Thal canal was not only a robbery on the waters of the River Indus but it was a frontal attack on the very integrity of Pakistan.

He said the Thal canal was not only aimed at converting the rich agricultural lands of Sindh into a desert but it was a conspiracy to destroy its thousand-year old culture and history and the identity of the Sindhi nation.

Dr Qadir Magsi, who is also the provincial president of PONAM, said that the on-going struggle against the greater Thal canal was to protect the culture and history of Sindh as all the people right from Karachi to Kashmore would be affected.

He made an impassioned appeal to the people to join the procession which will be taken out from Hyderabad on July 6 and terminate at Sukkur on July 8.

PML: The provincial president, PML(N), Imdad Hussain Chandio, and Mohammad Afzal Gujjar, who are members of the anti-Thal canal steering committee, in a joint statement issued here on Friday, also appealed to PML(N) workers to join the anti-Thal canal procession as the movement was aimed at saving the history and culture of Sindh.

They said that all the people living in Sindh, irrespective of the language they spoke, must shun their petty differences and join the struggle.

SNP: The Central Committee, Sindh National Party, at a meeting held here on Thursday, decided to hold peoples’ assemblies at all the district headquarters of Sindh against the construction of the greater Thal canal.

It condemned the allocation of more funds for the greater Thal canal and Wapda’s announcement to complete the project one year before the scheduled time.

It regretted that instead of taking notice of the protest by the Sindhi people against the greater Thal canal, the powers that be were inciting them to rebel.
