As a Pakistani-Canadian I condemn the oppressive and cruel role of Pakistani military in suppressing the Bangladesh Independence movement, which ultimately lead to the creation of a free country, Bangladesh. At the same time, however, I do sincerely and honestly feel that the BCB's directive against flying rivals' flags, during a popular sport like cricket, is just mean and uncalled for.

If PCB had stopped me from taking an Indian Flag to cheer the likes of Sachin, Dravid, Gangully, when they did last visit Pakistan, i would have stopped feeling proud of being a Pakistani. @VS: It does happen, and I personally saw it in the National stadium in Karachi where some folks from India were wearing Indian jerseys and openly cheering for India. And it was great to see them there. On top of that, India chased down a target of some 280 odd runs by 8 wickets or so. But I don't remember any whining from the Pakistani board the next day. This is undoubtedly a cheap act by the Bangladesh board.

I don't think anyone has understood the context. Freedom of speech is one thing; misusing it is entirely another thing. The ban is not specific to pakistani team but it is for any rival team. You will have to read it in this context. If you happen to raise banners and flags of an opposing team, then you are playing with the sentiments of 50,000 others who may take it in their own hands and before you blink there would be riots everywhere. Social sentiments need to be taken into consideration. Admiring a good play is different from holding the opposing flags. I bet you when they held those flags they never had cricket in mind but some downright cheap publicity. That is usually harmful no matter how you see it. If you were a pakistani and want to cheer India, sit in Indian side and cheer. If you do otherwise then you are inviting trouble and more specifically trouble for others for no mistake on their part. That message gets lost. Generally one has to be patriotic; if you dont like your home team then sit inside the home and cheer to your hearts content. Who cares? What Bangladesh did was right and just.

Indian and Pakistani origin citizens of England, Australia and Newzeland always cheer and fly flag of their countries of birth at cricket stadiums in those countries. Bangladeshis settled in those countries would do the same for their team. So what a big deal. Let people enjoy the game and cheer for whomever they want to cheer for. This is natural outcome. Some countries are so insecure and should learn to accept some tolerance at least when it comes to sports.

That is completely understandable. Carrying a Pakistani flag for Bangladeshis is rooting for a country that you won independence from after a VERY violent struggle (sparing the details here). This is not whether you think a certain player on a rival team is a good player. Do you think carrying a British flag immediately after independence would have been received kindly - either in South Asia or in the US in the decades following independence? The wounds are still raw.

It is a known fact that the Bangla Muslims strongly hate Pakistan. The youths in Bangladesh, who support Pakistan are basically the Bihari immigrants (equivalent to Mohazir), who are also known as "stranded Pakistanis". These people are about a million strong and they never accepted the creation of Bangladesh and continue to be loyal to Pakistan. Most of these Biharis are members of Jamate-e-Islami in Bangladesh. These are the guys who raise Pakistani flags and vociferously support Pakistani teams. The Pakistani citizens better not get a false idea about the Bangla population 'loving' Pakistan (by raising Pakistani flag). They are 'stranded Pakistanis', who have been pleading Pakistan Government since 1972 to allow their immigration to Pakistan. But Pakistan Government has rejected to accept them and Bangladesh Government treats them as second class citizens and calls them as "Trouble-maker Pakistanis".

ICC should take some promt steps because this is a ICC event and BD board has no authority to stop people from raising any country's flag. Actually when a WC is held, ICC gets full jurisdiction over the things happening inside the stadiums. BD board has no athourity to pass such orders.

Bangladeshi Board has banned flying rivals flags in the stadium. Perhaps this order only came after seeing that Pakistani flag was flying during Pakistan's Cricket match. I was very much delighted when witnessed my Bangla brothers carrying Pakistani flags. This scene gave me relief to my wounds which I got during 1971 war created by India to apart East Pakistan from us. The ordering authority could not bear Pakistani & Bengladeshis' hearts to meet in any way. But they must remember that being Muslims our hearts are still beating together. Some months back I met 3 Bengladeshi brothers who came on a Tableghi Tour to Bahawalpur. We met each other as if we remained away for so long time since 1971. I assure the Bangladeshi Teams as well as my Bangladeshi brothers & sisters that whenever their any team will come to Pakistan to play I will personally fly Bengladeshi flag. VS is the debat coordinator here, it seems. SO let me put my part in it too. @Mr. VS, you are mistaken in whole of the discussion here. (1) The issue here is not about Bangladeshies raising some other country (Pakistan's) flag while BD plays Pakistan. It is about Bangladeshies supporting Pakistan when they play Idia, Australia or any other country. So your concern about riots is unjustified. (2) It is an ICC tournament not a Bangladeshi. When ever ICC arranges an event, they have full jurisdiction over the stadium and they make the rule which ofcourse should not be against host country's laws. In ICC events no one can stop spectators from raising the flag or the banner they like (3) In football matches, they do seperate fans in different sections but in cricket they don't. Anyway its about the matches when BD is not playing itself. Actually present BD government gets cramps if their folk support Pakistan against India. This is the main reason but ICC has already gone in to the case.

Actually the story is a bit complicated. The fact is that the current illegal India-backed dictatorial Hasina regime has been trying its best to make the population angry against Pakistan and friendly to India, all the while massacring and torturing its citizens (anti-Hasina citizens) in the most brutal manner. As a result anti-Hasina citizens often cheer and clap and wave Pakistani flags as a sign of defiance and rejection of the Hasina regime's ideology from top to bottom. Hasina has done more than a million dollars of propaganda to make Bangladeshis love Pakistan. By her brutal oppression against the citizens and attempt to justify it with the "Spirit of 71" and using this "Spirit of 71" especially to oppress religious citizens she has successfully driven the "Spirit of 71" to the ground and a large proportion now think that the 71 war was an Indian plot and nothing to do with freedom for Bangladeshi people.

Why is BCB bold enough to say No Support For Pakistan Team by Bangladeshis. It is a shame on BCB to be childish in issuing such instructions.

Probably it's just Pakistan who always displays "tolerance" be it a cricket ground or anyone celebrating Indian's victory having them as their favorites.

This just goes to show that Bengalis never wanted to be separate from Pakistan, it was just the treacherous Awami League that was acting as agent of India for the dismemberment of Pakistan. Can't hide the truth forever, Hasina.

What a farce! By issuing this directive, BCB is actually creating awareness and publicizing their insecurities. Fans should be allowed to cheer for any team or player they like. For the remaining comments here: Bangladesh has not played against Pak or Ind yet.... if Bangladeshis fly either flag when Bangladesh is not playing a match, it should not matter or hurt other Bangladehis' feelings.

@Black Sabbath: Kindly remember about a match between India and Pakistan, which the stadium was to completely vacated by the audience to finish the match and another match semi final of world cup of 1996 in which when Indian team was losing to Sri Lanka people burnt the chairs of the stadium, this all happened in India.

Bangladeshis flew Pakistani flags on Indo-Pak cricket game, because many Bengalis from Bangladesh who crossed over to Assam and encroached lands, were targeted and killed, with their houses burnt down. I asked a Bengali Bangladeshi why you were supporting Pakistan during Indo-Paki cricket match, when India helped your country for Independence. The answer was" I am Muslim, wont support Hindus. A Muslim supports another Muslim". Further when I asked what about the genocide by the Pakistanis against Bengalis in Bangladesh, he could not answer, looked wary.

As An Indian I always want only my country people host flag of India. Flag is the symbol of victory. Under the Flag we take great decision. In sports Flag should be banned to host by any supporter. We respect Flag of any nation and always give respect. Here enmity comes because of Bangladesh liberation and atrocities done by Pakistan Army during that time. And these are still in the minds of country people but new generations don't give that much importance and only few fans go against the feeling of nation and do such activities. Praising of team happens in India, specially by one section of people which also create lots of problem . I would like to say don't go beyond sentiments of country and do such act. Every thing is being recorded in the memories and in adverse effect such act done in past create problem. I think, BCB took the right decision .U can support any team but u can not weave flag of other nation in your homeland. Though Pakistani supporters are stumbled much but it is applicable for in each match.

One of the reasons why Bangladesh is still a minnow. To win and be able to lose, you need to have a big heart, take the blows in your stride, learn from them, *get over them* and try to be better next time. Bangladesh is being intentionally kept in a hangover by its power hungry politicians for traction, and in the process disallowing it from going anywhere with any sense of purpose or clarity. I personally know a lot of Pakistani businessmen who've shifted business to Bangladesh, I don't see the Bangladeshi Government crying about that though ..
