KARACHI, July 3: Various parts of the city remained under the grip of acute water shortage on Thursday, making life in the affected localities miserable in the sizzling and humid weather.
The hard-hit areas included Pak Colony, Nazimabad No 3, Bahadurabad, Lyari’s Dariabad, Shah Beg Lane, Kharadar, Mithadar, Bhimpura, Ranchorre Lane, different sectors of North Karachi and Clifton’ blocks 4 and 5.
Residents of the affected localities complained that although the water shortage problem in their localities had been lingering since long, the officials concerned of the city government’s water and sanitation department had so far failed to rectify the problem responsible for non-availability of water.
“It is beyond one’s comprehension that though the lingering water issue of our locality is in the knowledge of the executive engineer concerned he has not yet been able to ensure supply,” said a resident of Clifton’s block 5.
In addition to the above-mentioned localities, the other areas which went without water on Thursday as part of the W&S department plan of diverting Indus water to the localities hooked to the Hub source included Landhi, Korangi, Defence Housing Authority, National Refinery, Karachi Port Trust and Pakistan Railways.
CONTAMINATED: Residents of Azizabad No 2 and Nazimabad No 3 complain that they are being supplied contaminated water for the last couple of days.
A resident of house 14/3, Nazimabad No 3, regretted that although a number of houses situated near Abbasi Shaheed Hospital were receiving stinking water, the officials concerned of the water and sanitation department had not yet taken measures to rectify the problem responsible for contaminated water.
Suspecting sewage water might be seeping into their pipeline, he said the authorities must remove the fault without further loss of time, or else the residents of the affected houses would be exposed to serious health hazards.
CLOSURE: The other parts of the city where water supply would remain suspended on Friday include Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s blocks 3, 4, 6, 7, 10, 10-A, 13-A, 13-B, 16, 17 and 18.
OVERFLOW: Filthy water gushing out from some overflowing gutters has spread on a number of streets near Tariq Road’s main commercial area.
The dirty water continuously overflowing from some manholes has not only created stinking environment in and around the commercial area, but it is causing inconvenience to the residents of the locality, those visiting the market and pedestrians.
Shopkeepers complain that overflowing gutters have become a recurring problem in the commercial area owing to the obsolete sewerage lines.
Filthy water also often remains stagnant at the Shaheed-i-Millat Road-Khalid Bin Waleed traffic intersection near Faiz-i-Aam Hospital because of overflowing gutters.
The overflowing water is also creating hindrance in the flow of traffic near the traffic intersection.
