KARACHI, Dec 15: The provincial secretary forest and environment, Shamsul Huq Memon, has directed the Provincial Environmental Protection Council to carry out a survey of the entire Karachi harbour to control sea pollution and chalk out a meaningful line of action.

He was presiding over a meeting held to discuss the strategy to control sea pollution.

He called for collecting complete information about the causes of the increasing sea pollution. He said the short-term measures should include survey and assessment, harbour cleaning programme, disposal of ship’s refuse, while the long-term measures should incorporate preparation of action plan, review of existing laws, treatment of polluted water, waste management at the Fish Harbour, removal of inoperative ships from the sea, provision of equipments for pollution control and creation of awareness among people and fishermen.—APP
