GUJRANWALA: Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 Judge Muhammad Imtiaz awarded on Saturday life term on two counts each along with a fine of Rs1.3 million collectively to two accused in as many acid attack cases.

According to the prosecution, Husnain of Daulatnager, Gujrat, threw acid on a class-IX girl ‘N’. The court awarded him life term on two counts with a fine of Rs1.1 million.

Similarly, Zaheer of Muradpur, Sialkot, sprinkled acid on his rival Shamas over an old enmity. The court awarded him life term on two counts along with Rs0.2 million fine.

Both convicts will have to undergo one-year additional imprisonment in case of default.

TWO PERISH ON ROAD: Two students of a Lahore medical college were killed while three others suffered injuries in a collision between a car and a trailer near Atawa, Eminabad, on GT Road on Saturday.

Reports said students of combined military hospital (CMH) medical college were on their way to Lahore from Ghakkhar Town after meeting their relatives by a car. Near Atawa, their speeding vehicle struck against a trailer laden with fertilizers.

As a result Abdullah of Chawinda (Sialkot) and Osama of Yazman, Mandi Bahawalpur, died on the spot while Abu Bakr of Multan, Abdul Wahid of Vehari and Hamza Abbasi of Lahore sustained critical injuries.

Abu Bakr was admitted to CMH Gujranwala and Abdul Wahid and Hamza to CMH Lahore.

It was stated that deceased Abdullah was driving the car and he lost control over the steering. The trailer driver managed his escape.

DEMO: The Christian community of Alipur Chattha demonstrated on Saturday outside the office of district coordination officer in protest against what they said illegal occupation of graveyard land by some influential people.

Some of the protesters -- Baba Anwer, Talib, Shehbaz, Khurshed, Saeed, Rukhsana and Nasim -- said the city district government had allotted 26 kanals land for Christian community’s graveyard.

But some influential people of the town grabbed it and constructed their houses and outhouses. They demanded that the government retrieve the land and hand it over to them.

They dispersed when the district administration assured them of action against the land grabbers.

ACE: The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) ordered on Saturday arrest of three officers of Nandipur town municipality on graft charges.

ACE Assistant Director Aitzaz Munir Gondal conducted an inquiry on the complaint of one Muhammad Ashraf.

According to the complainant, Nandipur Town Officer Pervaiz Iqbal and two Buildings Inspectors Riaz and Saleem got erected 36 towers of various cellular companies in municipality jurisdiction and allegedly embezzled some amount of rent. An inquiry proved them guilty and corruption cases were registered against them. ACE Regional Director Muzaffar Sayal ordered arrest of the officials.

Meanwhile, the ACE had registered a case against five revenue patwaris on corruption charges.

Patwari Murid Husain was involved in corruption of Rs53,000, Iftikhar Ahmad Rs52,000, Babar Siddiq Rs50,000, Gulzar Ahmad Rs13,000 and Muhammad Ali Rs3,000. They were found guilty in an inquiry.
