PESHAWAR, June 24: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal government has failed to get its orders implemented regarding ban on gambling, use of liquor and stopping music in public places.
NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has been trumping the ban on all these activities since he took over the charge, but has failed to get his orders implemented.
Dozens of shops in the main Saddar bazaar, Qisakhwani bazaar and Karimpura are also running the illegal business of prize bound numbers and bookmaking on cricket matches allegedly with the connivance of police officials.
The business of prize bound number was banned by the military rulers few years back, terming it equal to gambling, but the prize bound dealers never stopped the illegal activities due to the inefficiency of the law enforcement agencies.
All the dealers of prize bound number are also doing the illegal business of bookmaking on cricket matches openly in their shops. They have been indulging in the unlawful activities, it is said, due to their strong links in the police department.
The MMA government has failed to stop the use of liquor due to the easy availability of the banned item in the tribal area markets adjacent to Peshawar.
The liquor users continue to get their desired brands from the unlawful selective outlets of tribal sides of Karkhano bazaar and Darra Adamkhel market adjacent to the city.
However, since the government cancellation of liquor licences of two Peshawar hotels the rates had increased, said a liquor seller, having a shop in the tribal side of Karkhano bazaar.
The same is the case with the government orders of ban on music in public places. The people are defying the government orders and still organising music concerts in marriage ceremonies.
The public transporters also never stop playing audio cassettes while plying their vehicles on the road. Off and on they remove the audio cassette players from the vehicle, when they sense police action. But generally, they defy the orders.
The Capital City Police once in a month take action in the city in the name of ‘drive against obscenity’ and book some people under section 107 of the PPC to show their ‘efficiency’ to the government.
The police have also failed to stop the open sale of porno CDs and video cassettes and sex-stimulant drugs in the Karkhano markets.
