ISLAMABAD, June 23: A Pakistan Army spokesman on Monday said coalition forces were carrying out operations in Nangarhar and Kunar provinces of Afghanistan and there were no foreign troops operating on the Pakistan side.

An ISPR announcement said Pakistani troops, in cooperation with local people, had established their presence in the ‘No Go’ area except for a small pocket in the Salala Pass area close to the border “where some people are occupying hilltops and firing on our troops”.

“In response, our force is exercising utmost restraint and is trying to resolve the issue through Jirgas and other political means.”

It said Pakistani forces were respecting the border and added that since arrival of Pakistani FC and army troops in the so-called “No Go” areas on invitation of local tribes, certain press reports had appeared raising doubts about the exercise.

The announcement said it was clarified that the aim of the government was to benefit the people of the Mohmand Agency by undertaking development works, including provision of water and medical facilities and construction of roads and tracks, in their area.

“It is a landmark achievement, as for the first time in the history, the people will start benefiting from opening up of the area and improve their living conditions,” the announcement said.

APP adds: Foreign office spokesman Masood Ahmed Khan told his briefing that there was no joint operation being conducted by the US and Pakistani troops along the border. “No US troops are on our side.”
