Taimur Mawaz turns tide

LAHORE, Dec 14: Taimur Mawaz Khan “Tony” scored three goals to carry Merry Max to a 4-2 win over Borjan in the December Cup polo tournament at the Lahore Polo Club ground on Friday.

By dint of this win, Merry Max qualified to meet Musa Industries in final Saturday.

Earlier, the  subsidiary final will be played between the Guard Filter and PowerSoft the same day.

In the low-scoring semifinal, Merry Max displayed better scoring ability to earn the right to play the final. The only field goal of first chukker was scored by Taimur Mawaz Khan “Tony” for Merry Max on a pass from Malik Asif Yar Tiwana.

Umer Sadik scored only goal of second chukker on a spot penalty near the goalpost to bring Borjan on equal footing 1-1.

Captain Umer Minhas scored a goal on a solo effort for Merry Max at start of third chukker. Agha Murtaza Ali scored Borjan’s second and last goal on a field effort. Taimur Max scored his second and Merry Max’s third goal on a spot penalty near the goalpost.

Taimur Mawaz combined well with Umer Minhas to score his third and Marry Max’s fourth goal during fourth chukker. This was only goal of this chukker.

Guard Filter thanks to six-goal, including a hat trick from Taimur Malik were on a goal-scoring spree in the match against Sherwood which it won by the comfortable margin of 9-51/2 although the latter had the advantage of one-and-a-half-goal on the handicap which took it to the subsidiary final.

Lt.-Col Talat Zia drew first blood for Sherwood by scoring a field goal and later converted a spot penalty near the goalpost. In between his two goals, Malik Atif Yar Tiwana scored a field goal for Guard Filter. At end of the first chukker, Sherwood led by three-and-a-half goals to one..

All three goals of second chukker were scored by Guard Filter. Taimur struck twice while Captain Haseeb Minhas scored a field goal in between his two goals. Taimur converted a 30 yards penalty-hit and later crowned a field goal. Thus Guard Filter took a narrow lead 4-3 1/2.

Honours were shared during third chukker as both sides struck twice, each. Amanat and Maula Bakhsh scored a field goal, each for Sherwood. Taimur converted a 40 yards penalty-hit and later scored on a field effort. Guard Filter 6-5 1/2 lead at end of the third chukker.

Fourth chukker was completely dominated by the Guard Filter which added three goals to emerge as a clear winner. Taimur Malik scored two field goals, the second one with a lofted hit. Atif scored his second and the Guard Filter’s ninth goal on a pass from Taimur.
