KARACHI: Pakistan cricket team head coach Dav Whatmore, who will leave the team in February, has admitted that language barrier and communication remained a problem during his two-year tenure with the side.

“I think this [language barrier] was an issue specially the part where the communication came back,” Whatmore said while talking to a private TV channel from Abu Dhabi.

Some former Pakistan cricketers had criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decision to appoint a foreigner as a coach, pointing out that the language barrier was always a hindrance between the coach and the players, most of whom lack precise understanding of English language.

Whatmore, the former Australian Test cricketer, who has also coached the Sri Lankan and Bangladesh teams, said he felt that some (Pakistan) players found it difficult communicating back to him.

The coach, however, termed his stint with the Pakistan team as enjoyable and satisfying.

“Obviously, there is a feeling when you are getting ready to leave a bunch of players you have been with for two years but I am happy that the PCB and I am parting ways on a good and cordial note,” he said.

“I am happy with the way things have worked out with the PCB and, in future, if there is an opportunity to come and work in some other capacity with Pakistan cricket, I will do it,” the Aussie added.

Whatmore said he, after the expiry of his contract with the PCB next month, sought to spend quality time with his family.

“During the past two years, I have spent very little time with my family and I think now it is time to turn my attention to them,” he said.

Whatmore reckoned 2013 had been a tough year for Pakistan cricket but noted that the team came back strongly in South Africa where Misbah-ul-Haq led side won the three-match ODI series 2-1.—Agencies
