KARACHI, June 20: Sindh governor, Dr Ishratul Ibad, on Friday said that he would not allow the innocent people of the province to be killed in the name of Karo Kari.

While presiding over a high level meeting on law and order at Governor House, Dr Ibad said that being the followers of Islam, which is based on humanities, it was their responsibility to do something for the eradication of karo kari.

The governor said that tradition of karo kari was mostly practised for property and revenge. He said that the infamous tradition was not an honour for anybody, but it reflected cowardliness of cruel people and their enmity against humanity.

He directed for enforcement of special law to control this infamous tradition and ordered secretary home and secretary law to present him necessary legal rules in this regard within a week. He said that special measures would be taken for the eradication of karo kari.

After reviewing the proposed laws and consultation with the federal government, the governor said that these would be finalized.

Enough awareness had been created regarding the issue, he said adding that now there is need of practical steps for its elimination. He said that steps would also be taken against the patrons of this menace.

The meeting also reviewed the prevailing law and order situation in the province, including security arrangements for by-elections on June 23. Voters should be provided all available facilities to cast their votes in peaceful environment, the governor said.
