ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan on Sunday said that the government has worked out the country’s first three-pronged national security policy draft to curb terrorism and maintain law and order.

Addressing at a press conference at Punjab House, the minister said the policy draft would first be placed before the National Security Committee and then it would be announced after taking approval from the Federal Cabinet.

He said the first part of the draft would be secret and would not be made public.

The second part is strategic with an objective to carry forward government’s decisions’ for peaceful dialogue with militants, however the military operation would always be a option.

The third part is operational one to suggest the government means to ensure public security.

He said that the country has sustained heavy losses during the last 12 years but no concrete steps were taken in this regard.

“Within a few weeks of coming into power, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) has started a comprehensive work to shape a national internal security policy,” he said.

The minister said that under the proposed draft, efforts would also be made to in-place a complete operational network to purge districts, towns and streets from crimes.

He said that the draft also aimed at making the security agencies more active, efficient and strong.

Drone strikes

The interior minister also said that US drone strikes are an impediment to holding dialogue with the militants.

Nisar said that if the drone strikes had not been conducted then there would have been some progress in the dialogue process.

Pakistan has routinely condemned drone strikes on its soil as a violation of sovereignty and counterproductive to efforts to end militancy.
