HYDERABAD, June 19: A large number of small growers of Husri and Miano branches staged a demonstration outside the Hyderabad Press Club on Thursday against acute shortage of water.
Speaking on the occasion, Ghulam Rasool Dahejo, Hajjan Detho, Haji Khan Rind, Mohammad Yaqoob Mirjat and Shakoor Mallah said the officials of irrigation department had stopped the water supply to small growers on the pretext of rotation system.
They said there was no water even for drinking purpose. The growers said the main canals were overflowing but the officials had withheld water supply to them.
They said that influential landlords were being supplied more water than their requirements whereas the growers of Husri Shakh and Miano Shakh had not received a single drop of water for the last six months.
They appealed to the provincial irrigation minister to take notice of alleged corrupt practices of the superintending engineer concerned and the SDO and restore water supply to the small growers.
DEMO: The activists of the Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party staged a demonstration outside the Hyderabad Press Club on Thursday against the construction of the greater Thal canal.
Speaking on the occasion, the party leaders reproached the federal government for allocating funds in the budget for the construction of greater Thal canal despite the fact that it was rejected by the Sindh Assembly and the people of Sindh.
The STPP leaders said Islamabad had no respect for the voice of dissent from Sindh. They vowed to continue the struggle against Thal canal project unless it was shelved.
WATER SUPPLY: The water supply to three talukas of the city remained suspended from Wednesday evening to Thursday afternoon due to a major power breakdown.
Wasa authorities said the agency was working with Hesco to restore the power supply to the pumping stations to enable it to resume normal water supply to three talukas Hyderabad, Latifabad and Qasimabad.
Meanwhile, the residents of UC-15 staged a demonstration against the non-availability of drinking water.
They after gathering at the Tando Yousaf railway crossing marched to Wasa office. The demonstrators raised slogans against officials of the water supply agency.
They complained that their area was not being supplied water for the last five days.
