ABBOTTABAD, June 18: The Karakoram Highway remained closed on Wednesday after doctors and students of Ayub Medical College blocked it to press the police for the arrest of the culprit who had killed a doctor and injured another on Tuesday night.

The northern areas remained cut off from the rest of the country and long queues of vehicles were seen stranded on both sides of the road.

Source said some doctors were taking a walk on Ayub Medical Complex premises around 11.30pm on Tuesday when a car (3699) passed by them in speed, splashing standing rain water on them.

They asked the driver to go slowly but the driver opened fire on them with his pistol. As a result Dr Farooq and Dr Farman were injured. The driver was identified as Sardar Moazzam, a lawyer.

Dr Farooq was taken to the operation theatre but he died before any treatment could be provided to him. Dr Farman was admitted.

Angry students and doctors came out of their hostels and went to the Mirpur police station. Reports said police arrived at the scene of the murder late which irritated the students and doctors who blocked the main KKH.

The students set fire to Moazzam’s house and refused to lift the blockade until the alleged killer was arrested.

The students did not allow the staffers as well as the patients to enter the Ayub Medical Complex on Wednesday. There was also a boycott of classes at the college.
