RAWALPINDI, June 18: A suspended station house officer (SHO) along with his four subordinates and a councillor were booked on charges of allegedly keeping a citizen in illegal detention, official source said on Wednesday.

Shortly after the registration of the FIR, two of the accused police officials identified as ASI Mumtaz and SI Allah Bakhsh were taken into custody, police said.

Mohammad Akram, a resident of Sadiqabad, who had a property dispute with his brother, went to the area police station for help but he was shown the door. Later on, he approached Deputy Inspector General Israr Ahmed who sent him to the police station with his reference.

Mr Akram went to the police station and showed the DIG’s directives to the then SHO Abdul Razaq Janjua and the investigating officer SI Allah Bakhsh. But they got infuriated and beat him for approaching the DIG. The victim said he was freed after six hours of detention and forced to give a written statement on paper in favour of the Sadiqabad police.

After his release, Mr Akram again approached the DIG to inform him about the torture suffered at the hands of the Sadiqabad police. The DIG ordered an inquiry into the incident and appointed SP Range Crime as inquiry officer.

The inquiry led to the registration of an FIR against the then SHO Abdul Razaq Janjua, ASI Mumtaz, SI Allah Bakhsh, four other police officials, a local councillor and Anwar Ali (the brother of Akram).

The concern is that if the government is thinking of cutting costs through the merger, we might even lose the functionality levels we currently have.
