KARACHI: Stamp Act to be amended

Published December 15, 2001

KARACHI, Dec. 14: Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro has given an approval to a proposal for reducing the number of articles in the Stamp Act from existing 65 to 31 only.

The proposal will come into force after an amendment in the Stamp Act by the Law Department, APP learnt from official sources.

The Stamp Act of 1899 is an excellent piece of legislation. In order to update it and to delete the redundant articles which do not contribute much to the provincial exchequer, an exercise was conducted recently.

An annexure-A reflects those articles in the schedule-1 of the stamp act, 1899, which need to be deleted as the importance of documents embodying the same has either been zero or negligible, while another annexure-B reflects those that are to be retained as articles of the schedule-1 of the said act.

The sources said the proposals would cost the government exchequer only a negligible amount of Rs100 million, but instead shall give a substantial relief to the inhabitants of the province.—APP
