HYDERABAD, Oct 11: A three feet portion of railway track was damaged as a locally made but powerful explosive device exploded on the railway track between Detha and Musa Khatiyan railway station late Wednesday night.

The explosion took place at 12 midnight as an empty goods train (GK-10 down) was passing on the track.

According to the Hyderabad Railway police, case has been lodged against unidentified persons on the complaint of Qalandar Bukhsh, driver of the engine.

The police said that the windowpanes of the engine were smashed because of the explosion as stones flew and hit them.

However no damage was caused to the rest of the train which comprised 54 empty bogies. It was coming from Rohri and going to Karachi.

The police said that the explosion occurred while the engine was three to four feet away from the place of blast which created a crater near the track.

The driver stopped the train and checked the spot. Bomb disposal squad (BDS) and police officials visited the site after the incident.

No one was arrested so far.

The railway police confirmed that no trains were delayed as neither was scheduled to pass from the area when the explosion occurred.

A bomb disposal squad official told Dawn that it was locally made powerful device weighing over four pounds adding that no timer was fixed.

About the make of the device the official claimed that the bomb’s apparatus included two iron plates.

The engineer claimed that when the explosion took place he felt jolts in his engine.
